Ian Charlesworth Hartcliff Hill is a BS category fell race on a marked and marshalled course – no navigation or prior experience required, however all runners should familiarise themselves with the route. The terrain is a mixture of fields and rough tracks, with three short sections of asphalt road.

From 2026 the race is named after Ian Charlesworth. Ian was a very prominent member of the club for over 25 years, who led the junior section for much of that time, inspiring many with his love of running and racing on the fells. He organised this race for a number of years as well as many other aspects of club life. His untimely death in 2025 was a tragedy for his family and his many friends in the club and he is very much missed.

The race starts and finishes in Penistone, on the playing fields next to the Bowling Club. The race previously started near Langsett reservoir, but in recent years it has been difficult to organise because of parking permissions.

Entry

Pre-entry is £6. Entry on the day will be available for £8 if race limit of 200 not reached.

Minimum age to enter is 17 on 31 December 2026 (FRA rules).

If under 18 and not accompanied by a parent or guardian please bring a completed FRA Parental Consent Form.

This race has a permit and associated UK Athletics insurance from the Fell Runners Association.

The race in 2014 was cancelled due to the Foot and Mouth outbreak, those in 2020 and 2021 due to the Covid-19 pandemic, and the 2022 race due to lack of parking facilities.
