Marathon success and championship racing
Our runners were in action across a packed weekend of racing, with standout performances at the Manchester Marathon, the Dronfield 10K and the South Yorkshire Road League, alongside another strong showing at parkrun venues across the country.
At the Adidas Manchester Marathon, the club produced a series of excellent performances in one of the UK’s largest races. Alan Nutton led the way with an impressive 2-55-24, finishing 751st overall, while Will Hoyland also broke the three-hour barrier with a fine 2-57-15. Chloe Worth led the Penistone women with 3-48-51, taking four minutes off her previous best in a superb run. There were a number of notable personal achievements across the field. Rory O’Sullivan completed his first marathon in 3-54-23, while Chris Baldwin recorded his fastest marathon to date. Carl Matthewman produced his second quickest marathon performance with 4-50-46, and Heather Graham enjoyed her first outing over the distance, finishing in 5-08-23. Gareth Irvine showed great determination to finish in 3-35-49.
The Dronfield 10K, which also marked the opening race in the club road championship, saw an excellent turnout on a tough, hilly course. Flynn Rogers led the way with an outstanding run to finish fifth overall in 36-29, while also taking first place in the under18 category. James Mumford continued his consistent form with 38-14 to finish thirteenth, and Martin Ball was close behind in 39-13, placing highly in the over50 category. There was good depth throughout the field, with Alexander Melhuish running 41-40 and Shaun Swallow clocking 44-10 in the over50 category. Robin Clough (47-26) and Michael Walsh (47-44) were closely matched, while John Howsham recorded 48-34 in the over60 category. Ray Brown completed the course in 1-11-01 in the over70 category, while Bill Phillips and Keith Gordon also featured in the same age group. Penistone’s women were also well represented, with Olivia Clough leading the group in 58-07. Barbara Haigh produced another strong run to place highly in the over70 category with 1-03-37, while Ruth Albaya Melhuish (1-04-19), Kim Rogers (1-04-21) and Amber Stenton (1-04-42) all finished close together.
We were also well represented at the second race of the South Yorkshire Road League, held at Ingbirchworth in breezy conditions with occasional showers. Flynn Rogers again led the team home with a strong run to finish 27th in 29-34, followed closely by Sean Pitt in 29-44 and James Mumford in 30-19. Ashley Firth (30-28) and George Parr (31-03) added further strength to the team performance. Rob Lees (32-20) and Daniel Rushforth (32-54) were next to finish, while Suzanne McGill led the women’s team with an excellent 33-38 to take first place in the over45 category. Jade Crosby (34-45) and Josie Smith (34-56) also ran well, with Ian Neville (34-46) taking top spot in the over60 category. Further strong performances came from Lee Storey (33-58), Robin Clough (38-50), Nick Pepper (39-17), Shaun Swallow (40-33) and Paul Fryers (40-51), while Fay Nicholls (41-25) and Jill Scrivens (41-45) impressed in the women’s categories. Barbara Haigh claimed first place in the over75 category and Ray Brown topped the over85 category.
Further afield, Robert Davies represented the club at the ABP Newport Marathon, producing an excellent run of 3-26-52 to finish 769th overall and eighth in the men’s over60 category, marking his third fastest marathon to date.
Saturday’s parkruns saw another excellent turnout, with 81 members taking part across 18 venues in warm and sunny conditions. Jade Crosby was first female at Penistone in 20-45, while Richard Heppenstall stormed to overall victory at the same event in a personal best 17-52. Sean Pitt and Ashley Firth also featured prominently near the front, while George Parr and Ryan Duckett both secured category wins. James Fryers added another victory at Jesmond Dene in 18-11. Suzanne McGill finished second female at Penistone, while Richard Cottam took second place at Beacon Hill. At Barnsley, Ian Neville (first over60) and Phil Hinchliffe (first over55) led the way, with Alan Knox (first over70), Sue Hall (first over65) and Danny Batty (first over80) all securing category wins. Milestones were also celebrated, with Jane Cockerton completing her 350th parkrun at Hillsborough, Matthew Coldwell reaching the same landmark at Sherwood Pines, and Martyn Cartwright recording his 200th parkrun at Penistone. The highest age-graded performance of the weekend came from Julia Johnson with an outstanding 89.94%, followed by Richard Heppenstall (84.61%), Suzanne McGill (78.27%), Ian Neville (75.51%) and Rob Lees (75.02%).
