The North Sheffield and Barnsley Fell Running Time Trial Series is a race against the clock using Strava Course segments.
Please note this is not a Penistone Footpath Runners competition – we are just using our website to make the information and files available.
With the fell running race season postponed due to the risks of spreading the COVID-19 virus from mass participation, the time trial series is a competition that can be completed on your own, with people still being encouraged responsibly to take outdoor exercise for health benefits (both physical and mental) whilst donating to a good cause.
Two Strava segment fell running courses will be made available per month on this page (see below) until the end of July (10 in total). Series placings will be based on the lowest cumulative time for all the fell running courses, with people able to run them more than once to improve their time. Age/gender categories will be as those shown for Strava Segments and some token prizes will be awarded at the end of the series. There’s a Facebook page to enable people to chat and generally facilitate communication about the courses and the series.
The intention is also to have some Strava challenges that don’t count in the series, just for the fun of it. These might be fell ‘uphill’ and ‘downhill’ challenges and cycling (for those who want to take part but are injured runners!)
To enter the series, a donation can be made to the Fell Running Series PayPal pool (see Facebook ‘about’ page). Please donate whatever you want. All proceeds will go to those affected by the Coronavirus (whether token support to local businesses, fuel for those in our local community using vehicles for assisting elderly with shopping etc – completely open to ideas on this and where best it can be used).
All you need is to be a member of Strava and have a GPS watch with ability to synchronise activities to Strava. GPX files for the courses will also be made available, so GPS watches can be used for running the courses.
Obviously this is not an official series and it will all be at the risk of those taking part and to make life a bit more interesting for those who will be running anyway. People must also follow any guidance related to their responsibilities related to the spread of COVID-19.
Courses will be designed by people who spend their lives running in this great area we live in, so those participating are bound to run on new trails and experience the best of our local fell running environment.
Have fun everyone and stay safe!
The links below are for the Strava segment, where you can see the current leaderboards, and the gpx files for the routes, which you use to help navigate the route (note: the GPX files download as .txt files so you need to change the file extension to .gpx before importing them into GPS software or uploading them to a device).
